Why join Transfer Peer Mentoring?

There are many benefits to a peer mentoring program, but specific benefits will vary as the reasons for joining and the particular needs of individual students vary. What makes this mentoring program unique is that it was created with the transfer student experience in mind, and students can get involved before they begin taking classes at the  University of Arizona. We always center transfer students in our work, and Transfer Peer Mentoring is no different.

Below, you'll be able to learn about some expected benefits of mentoring.

Smooth Transition

Transferring to a large Research 1 (R1) university, like the University of Arizona, can be overwhelming. Transfer peer mentors can help students throughout the three stages of the transfer process to ensure they feel confident while transferring and acclimating to this new environment more quickly and comfortably.

  • Stage 1: Preparing to transfer
  • Stage 2: Transfer process (i.e., Application, Acceptance, Next Steps, Orientation, etc.)
  • Stage 3: Adjusting to your first semester as a Wildcat
Personalized Guidance

Mentors who have been through the transfer process can offer personalized advice and insights, helping new students navigate academic and social challenges.

Academic Support

Mentors can provide tips on preparing for advisor meetings, study habits, and time management, ensuring that transfer students stay on track with their academic goals.

Networking Opportunities

Joining can help transfer students build a network of peers, mentors, and staff/faculty, which can be invaluable for academic and career growth.

Resource Awareness

Mentors can introduce transfer students to campus resources such as Thrive Center, THINK CENTER, Student Engagement & Career Development, CAPS, libraries, and extracurricular activities, enhancing their college experience.

Institutional Knowledge

Mentors can help students navigate university policies, explain commonly used acronyms, walk through different websites and tools utilized by the university, and even share their favorite place to grab lunch or homework/hangout spot.

Community Building

Being part of a mentorship program fosters a sense of belonging and community, making the University of Arizona feel more like home.

Increased Confidence

With the support and guidance of a mentor, transfer students can gain confidence in their abilities and feel more empowered to take on new challenges. In turn, increased confidence can help reduce Transfer Shock and Imposter Syndrome.

Additional benefits include but aren't limited to Career Advice, Skill Development, and Emotional Support that can reduce feelings of isolation.
